Sure barbells are nice... but sometimes it can be a lot more fun to train with
something that wasn't exactly made to be lifted. For a real challenge, try lifting
an object that is heavy, awkward and unbalanced then you'll be able to
see just how strong you really are.
Barrels or kegs are a great
place to start. A half-filled barrel is more than enough of a challenge for any
strong man -- and moreso than you might think.
Keep in mind though that barrels are just one of the unusual weights that
many of the oldtime strength athletes used to train with. Others examples
are stones, anvils, logs, sandbags and sledge hammers... and yes, barbells
and dumbbells too, albeit usually of the thick-handled variety.
... All Equipment that you probably won't find in many gyms
these days, along with a lot of things that used to be commonplace: hard work,
common sense, dedication, effort, determination, perseverance...
If you want to get strong, I'm talking about building REAL strength, then you'll
have to step into the time machine and go back to when strength training really
was about training.
Tendon and ligament training, the bent-press, heavy supports, one arm
lifts, power rack work, grip training - if these are the kinds of topics you want to
hear more about then a book that definitely needs to be on your reading list is
Dinosaur Training by Brooks Kubik.
